Hello! Thank you for visiting my website.
I am a journalist and teacher. Formally, I am the director of the low-residency MFA in Narrative Nonfiction and the Charlayne Hunter-Gault writer in residence at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. I teach my students how to become stronger storytellers; I embrace in-depth journalism as literature grounded in fact. Before UGA, I aught at the University of Florida, where I was honored to be named the 2020 Teacher of the Year.
I began my career in journalism in 1983. Since then, I have worked at various media outlets, among them CNN and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. These days, I work as a freelance journalist and publish stories in various magazines.
I was born in Kolkata, India and grew up straddling two cultures. It messed me up for a while but now in my 60s, I think I have finally found myself.
A platoon sergeant once called me “Evil Reporter Chick” and my greatest claim to fame is that I was featured once as a war reporter in a Marvel comics series.
In my spare time, I love to travel. I think often about what older age will look like for me and am impatient to experience places I have yet to visit. My daily solace comes from long walks in my Atlanta neighborhood or in Piedmont Park. Sometimes with my furry son Gizmo; other times, in solitude.
I post random thoughts and essays on this site. I hope you enjoy reading them.
